Former mayor of NYC Rudy Giuliani, formerly personal attorney to Donald Trump and recently hit with a massive judgment, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in New York.
Bloomberg Law tweeted the news Thursday afternoon:
“BREAKING: Rudy Giuliani files for chapter 11 bankruptcy in New York.”
In documents filed in Manhattan federal court, Giuliani listed debts as high as $500 million and assets as high as $10 million.
Last week, Giuliani was ordered to pay $148 million in damages to Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, two Georgia election workers whom Giuliani accused of tampering with 2020 presidential election ballots. The women told a Washington, D.C., jury that Giuliani’s campaign against them led to death threats and racially-motivated harassment that made them fearful to leave their homes.
The judge ruled Thursday that Giuliani must pay the millions as soon as possible.
Since the jury awarded the damages, however, Giuliani has continued to speak out about the women, causing Freeman and Moss to sue him for defamation a second time.
In September, Giuliani was sued by his former attorneys for nearly $1.4 million in unpaid legal fees. He is also a co-defendant with Trump and several other of the former president’s attorneys in the criminal election fraud case filed in Georgia.
This is a breaking story and has been updated.
