‘I Have Great Fantasies’: Biggs and Raskin Have Bizarre, Contentious Exchange During Committee Hearing
Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) and Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) found themselves in a heated verbal exchange during a House Oversight Committee hearing over whether to hold Hunter Biden in contempt for ignoring a congressional subpoena.
Republicans on the committee voted to hold President Joe Biden’s son in contempt for the subpoena issued to him last year. Hunter refused to testify before the committee because he would do so in a closed-door meeting instead of a public forum.
Democrats have argued that Hunter should not be held in contempt because GOP lawmakers who currently sit on the Oversight Committee have also ignored congressional subpoenas. Reps. Jim Jordan (R-OH), Scott Perry (R-PA), and Biggs were subpoenaed by the January 6th Committee but never testified before Republicans took the House majority.
Biggs and Raskin argued about this point shortly before the committee ended up holding Hunter in contempt via a party-line vote of 23-14:
BIGGS: And um, in my experience, some of those people up there did not receive a subpoena and so notified counsel for your bogus J6 committee.
RASKIN: Well, um, first of all, every court in the land has rejected the claim there was anything bogus about it. As you know, uh, the courts rejected the idea that it was somehow–
BIGGS: Was it heard before every court in the land?
RASKIN: Do you have any authority on your side for that outrageous proposition? I know you’d like to believe it, but your fantasies are not the law of the United States.
BIGGS: I have great fantasies.
RASKIN: And I’m certain you do. You and Ms. [Marjorie Taylor] Greene might want to discuss them together.
